Our energy policy

Our energy policy

Oil refining is one of the most energy-intensive industries. Our plant uses about 8.5% of its crude oil input to produce the energy – electricity, steam and heating medium – it needs. Consequently, as employees of PCK Raffinerie GmbH, we have a particular responsibility to save energy – for the sake of natural resources, the environment and the climate.

In the Solomon Energy Intensity Index in 2008, we ranked in the third quartile in terms of energy efficiency. We intend to improve our position and join the most efficient refineries in the first quartile by 2020. To do so, assuming external conditions remain unchanged, in the first stage until 2014 we will endeavour to reduce our total energy consumption by 5% or 68.5 MW, which corresponds to the energy consumption of about 50,000 people.

The measures required include:

  • Systematically recording and evaluating energy consumption throughout the company
  • Recording and regularly updating energy flows
  • Planning and carrying out energy-saving measures
  • Fixing short- and long-term energy-saving targets
  • Regularly evaluating energy-saving measures
  • Continuously updating planned activities to improve energy efficiency

We will also regularly check that:

  • The necessary financial and structural requirements are met
  • All staff are integrated into the implementation of the energy management system and their responsibilities specified
  • Relevant legal obligations and other demands are observed
